Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Holds 81st Indonesian Independence Day Ceremony

RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo – The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo held a ceremony to commemorate the 81st Independence Day of Indonesia in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday, August 17, 2026. The event, held in Tokyo, was attended by officials and staff of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, educators, students from the Indonesian School in Tokyo (SRIT), as well as representatives of the Indonesian community in Japan and Japanese authorities.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, personally served as the inspector of the flag-raising ceremony. The raising of the Red and White flag was carried out by the Flag-Raising Team, who are students of SRIT.

The series of events included the flag-raising and lowering ceremonies, as well as an Independence Day Gathering. In addition, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo presented the Satya Lencana award to several civil servants (ASN) who have served there.

Amid the Independence Day celebrations, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo also expressed its sympathy for the earthquake disaster in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Ceremony participants were invited to join in offering prayers for all victims of the natural disaster.

After the ceremony finished, the event continued with a reception, entertainment performances, and the cutting of the tumpeng (traditional Indonesian rice cone). Kartini expressed her gratitude and joy for the holding of the Indonesian Independence Day commemoration in Tokyo.

“Praise and thanks be to God Almighty that we are able to gather together to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence. This is the first time I have celebrated Independence Day with fellow Indonesian citizens in Japan. Indonesia’s independence is both a blessing and a mandate for all of us to fill this independence with our best work for the nation and the country,” Ambassador Kartini said, as quoted in a written press release.

Ambassador Kartini called on all Indonesian citizens to continue fostering friendship and to comply with the laws in effect in Japan. This appeal was made to strengthen the long-standing bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Japan.
