RRI.CO.ID, Palu - A delegation from Myanmar visited the city of Palu on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, to exchange knowledge on post-disaster recovery. This visit was facilitated by the World Bank with the aim of strengthening regional cooperation in disaster resilience.
The Assistant for Economic and Development Affairs of the Palu City Secretariat, Rahmad Mustafa, directly received the delegation at the Palu Mayor's Office. He was accompanied by several senior city government officials in the warm meeting.
The main focus of this visit is to share experiences related to disaster response, rehabilitation, and long-term reconstruction. Both parties discussed strategies for strengthening institutional capacity and community resilience in disaster-prone areas.
In his speech, Rahmad highlighted the similarities in geological disaster risks faced by Myanmar and the city of Palu. "On behalf of the Government and the people of Palu, we warmly welcome your presence. We share similar challenges in facing disaster risks, and we appreciate this opportunity to learn from each other," Rahmad stated.
The city of Palu itself was struck by a devastating earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction in 2018, causing widespread damage. Since then, the local government has continued to implement rehabilitation and reconstruction programs to rebuild a safer city.
Officials outlined efforts to build earthquake-resistant infrastructure such as bridges, hospitals, and sturdier schools. Rahmad emphasized that Palu is now striving to position itself not just as an affected city, but as a center for sustainable reconstruction learning.
"Palu is striving to position itself not just as a disaster-affected city, but as a learning center for resilient and sustainable reconstruction practices," he said.
