RRI.VOI.ID, Jakarta – Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono emphasized that the Indonesia–Australia Joint Security Treaty signed by President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese builds on 2006 the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between both countries.

The minister explained that the treaty focuses on strengthening bilateral consultation mechanisms in the field of security and is not intended to establish a military alliance or a new defense pact.

“This is neither a defense pact nor a military pact. There is no provision that a threat to one country is perceived as a threat to the other. This is a consultation forum on security situations in the region,” Sugiono said during a press statement at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday, 6 February 6 2026.

He said the security cooperation under the treaty includes regular consultation forums between leaders and ministers of both countries to discuss developments in regional and global security situations that have mutual impacts.

According to Sugiono, such consultation mechanisms are important to support Indonesia’s national interests, including safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as improving public welfare, all of which require a stable and peaceful regional environment.

“To achieve our national goals and interests, we need a stable, calm, and peaceful atmosphere. Without stability and peace, our interests and aspirations cannot be realized,” Sugiono said.

He added that cooperation and communication with countries in the region are key to managing shared challenges in a constructive manner. He stressed that consultation mechanisms of this kind are a common practice in Indonesia’s diplomacy, both at the bilateral and regional levels.

“In the current global situation, communication as well as cooperation and collaboration are essential. Therefore, a shared understanding of the global situation is needed,” he said.

Sugiono also reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to continuing to build good neighborly relations with partner countries, including Australia, through open dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation.
