RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed the signing of the Jakarta Treaty 2026 as a historic milestone that strengthens the Indonesia-Australia strategic alliance, rooted in trust and long-term security.

“Today, we have signed the Jakarta Treaty 2026. This agreement reflects the close friendship, partnership, and deep trust between our two nations within the framework of a comprehensive strategic partnership,” PM Albanese said during his visit to the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Friday, February 6, as quoted by Antara.

He noted that the treaty builds on negotiations substantially concluded during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Sydney in November last year. The joint security agreement, he added, underscores the depth of bilateral friendship under the comprehensive strategic partnership.

He described the accord as a landmark moment that reinforces Indonesia and Australia’s commitment to working together in safeguarding regional peace and stability. 

He emphasized that bilateral ties are now at their strongest point, following three decades of defense cooperation since the landmark agreement signed under Prime Minister Paul Keating and President Soeharto in December 1995.

The Australian leader also praised President Prabowo’s role in advancing regional and global security. He stressed that the Jakarta Treaty expands the scope of existing defense and security cooperation while reflecting the growing level of trust between two nations that share one of the world’s longest maritime boundaries.

As part of the treaty’s implementation, Albanese announced several new initiatives, including the placement of senior Indonesian officers within the Australian Defence Force, the development of joint defense training facilities to enhance combined exercises, and expanded military education exchanges to strengthen ties across generations of military leadership.
