Australia’s Chief Scientist Visits Jakarta

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Tony Haymet, visited Jakarta from 10-11 June. He discussed research infrastructure priorities and explore opportunities for greater cooperation between Australia and Indonesia.

During his visit, Professor Haymet, held a meeting with the Indonesian Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Professor Brian Yuliarto, and the Chairman of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Professor Arif Satria.

“This visit marks an important milestone in Australia–Indonesia science engagement. Professor Haymet’s visit, and the warm reception from Indonesian counterparts, reflects growing mutual interest in expanding scientific cooperation,” Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier said.

According to a release received by RRI Voice of Indonesia on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Australia and Indonesia shared a strong commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation to address common challenges like climate change. Both countries recognise the importance of international collaboration to support scientific breakthroughs.

Professor Haymet reflected on his visit, noting, “I have been very impressed by the scientists I met while in Indonesia. As neighbours with a long history of scientific cooperation, it is important that our scientists keep working together.”

Professor Haymet also spoke at a Climate Governance Forum, engaged with university leaders in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, and visited BRIN’s Oceanographic Research Laboratory. BRIN welcomed Australian cooperation in various fields, including maritime, ICT and sports science, and noted that space cooperation was open to all partners.
