RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Director General for the Americas and Europe at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Grata Endah Werdaningtyas, said Indonesia and Slovakia have agreed to enhance cooperation in the areas of energy transition, food self-sufficiency, and health.
She said the cooperation aligns with the Indonesian government’s policy of prioritizing energy security and energy transition, including plans to develop nuclear power plants (NPPs) to support the shift toward clean energy.
“Slovakia has offered its expertise in the nuclear sector, including in the development and decommissioning of nuclear facilities,” Grata said after a joint press statement by Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono and Slovak Foreign Minister, Juraj Blanar in Jakarta on Tuesday, 3 February 2026.
According to her, Slovakia has experience in nuclear safeguards and oversight, including waste management and post-closure safety of nuclear power plants.
“Issues related to safeguards, waste, and post-decommissioning safety are critical concerns, and not all countries, including those in Europe, have decommissioning capacity,” she conveyed.
Beyond the energy sector, the two countries will also strengthen cooperation in agriculture following successful research collaboration between Andalas University and universities in Slovakia to develop wheat varieties that can be grown in tropical climates.
Indonesia and Slovakia have also opened opportunities to enhance defense cooperation, not only in the procurement of defense equipment, but also in capacity building and joint development.
“There have been discussions on how to enhance defense cooperation, not only in terms of defense equipment, but also joint cooperation for capacity building and joint development,” Grata stated.
In addition, she added that Indonesia and Slovakia already have several technical-level bilateral mechanisms, including a joint consultation forum and an economic committee, which serve as an important foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation.
She further said that if a strategic partnership is established, these mechanisms will be utilized to review existing agreements to avoid overlap and ensure structured cooperation.
“The strategy is to ensure that every upgrade in bilateral cooperation provides added value and benefits for both countries,” Grata said.
Earlier, Slovak Foreign Minister, Juraj Blanar, stated that his country is ready to expand cooperation with Indonesia in various fields, including the nuclear energy sector. With more than 60 years of experience in nuclear development, Slovakia has expressed its readiness to share expertise with Indonesia, which is planning to build its first nuclear power plant.
