RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Turkiye marked the 10th anniversary of the failed military coup d'état attempt in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. In his remarks, Turkish Ambassador to Indonesia, Talip Küçükcan, highlighted the Turkish people's and institutional resistance against the coup.

He mentioned the role of the political leadership at the time, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who at the time invited the people to the streets protesting the coup. "Yes, we paid a heavy price on the one hand. But also, we have seen that democracy is reclaimed by the people on the streets, along with the media, democratic institutions in Turkiye, and political parties of any kind," he said.

As its embassy in Indonesia held a commemorative event in Jakarta on the same day, the country encouraged greater cooperation with Indonesia to safeguard democracy and strengthen state institutions. Ambassador Küçükcan said the commemoration serves as an opportunity for Turkiye and Indonesia to learn from past events. Through the event, he encouraged closer cooperation to promote democracy and empower the democratic institutions.

"We will try to look at how Turkiye and Indonesia can help each other or can learn from each other's experiences in order to promote democracy... (as well as) empower the democratic institutions like the constitution, the parliament, the government, etc.," he said.

The event, themed "Victory of Democracy", featured a photo exhibition and the screening of a short film about the 2016 coup attempt. A panel discussion was also held, featuring Indonesian and Turkish academics.

At the discussion, Küçükcan highlighted the growing ties between Indonesia and Turkiye, particularly in defense. He even stated that both countries are currently "enjoying the best time of their diplomatic relations".

"I think this should continue, and we should again take some lessons from such unfortunate events that democracy should be preserved, should be strengthened through institutions, and also through collaboration between two friendly nations," he conveyed.

In addition, a faction within the Turkish Armed Forces attempted to seize power in 2016. However, the statements by political leaders and public resistance as people took to the streets prevented the coup from succeeding.

Then, President Erdogan accused the social movement inspired by prominent Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen of being behind the coup attempt. After the failed coup, the Turkish government launched a sweeping crackdown on individuals and organizations allegedly linked to the movement, a campaign that drew international scrutiny.
