RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has confirmed that none of the 1,726 Indonesian nationals who reported to the mission between January 16–21, 2026, showed indications of being victims of human trafficking.
Ambassador Santo Darmosumarto stated during a virtual press briefing organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday, January 22, 2026, that initial assessments revealed no signs of trafficking or physical abuse among the group.
“Based on the embassy’s early assessment, no Indonesian citizens were identified as victims of human trafficking. None displayed signs of physical violence,” Ambassador Santo said, as quoted by Antara.
According to him, the 1,726 Indonesians came forward to the embassy after leaving online scam syndicates operating in various parts of Cambodia. While their physical condition was generally safe and healthy, many experienced fatigue, stress, and trauma due to the long journey to the embassy.
“Of course, after such a long trip, some were stressed, some exhausted, and some traumatized. Each person’s trauma may stem from different reasons,” he explained.
Those who were ill, including cases of fainting and dehydration, were taken to local health facilities for treatment. Meanwhile, the embassy directed the group to find accommodation in guesthouses around Phnom Penh.
“For those unable to afford guesthouses, the embassy has arranged temporary shelters and provided necessary logistical support,” Ambassador Santo added. ***
