RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani hosted a state visit from the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, Woo Won-Shik, at the Parliament Complex in Central Jakarta on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The meeting was conducted to bolster bilateral ties and prioritize the welfare of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in South Korea. This high-level dialogue was executed through a formal parliamentary reception aimed at synchronizing legislative support for labor protection and strategic cooperation.

"On behalf of Indonesia, we would like to thank the Republic of Korea for opening employment opportunities for tens of thousands of Indonesian migrant workers across various sectors," Puan said, accompanied by members of the DPR during the reception, as quoted by Antara.

She emphasized that the Indonesian parliament remains deeply concerned with the protection of these workers who are contributing to the South Korean economy.

Puan highlighted several priority areas for improvement, including enhanced pre-departure training, closer monitoring of on-site working conditions, and strict legal enforcement against any labor violations. She also took the opportunity to express her gratitude for the protective measures already implemented by the South Korean government.

“We appreciate South Korea's steps in improving labor regulations for foreign workers and the close cooperation with Indonesian representatives in Seoul to ensure every Indonesian migrant worker in Korea can work safely, with dignity, and receive their full rights,” she explained.

Puan further noted that the bilateral and inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two nations has developed rapidly over their 53 years of diplomatic relations.

“Today, Indonesia and the Republic of Korea are special strategic partners who will continue to work together to provide direct benefits to the people of both countries,” Puan clarified.

She expressed her hope that the partnership remains rooted in shared values like democracy, respect for human rights, and a commitment to fair multilateralism rather than just pragmatic interests. “This commitment becomes increasingly important amidst the current global situation filled with uncertainty," Puan added.

Regarding the trade sector, she stressed the importance of joint efforts to eliminate non-tariff barriers, such as aligning standards and certifications to smooth bilateral trade flows.

“We hope this step increases access for the superior products of both countries to each other's markets. I am confident that the Indonesian Government will continue to strengthen business certainty through simplified licensing and updated investment regulations,” she said.

Puan expressed her belief that through the synergy of government policy and parliamentary support, economic cooperation will enter a more strategic and mutually beneficial phase.

In response, Woo Won-Shik affirmed that South Korea is eager to continue investing in the archipelago. The South Korean Speaker also pledged continued support for Indonesia’s development goals to ensure the nation achieves its "Indonesia Golden 2045" vision. ***
