RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia strongly condemns the destruction of the facilities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) by Israel, which occurred in East Jerusalem, Tuesday, 20 January 2026.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the action constitutes a serious violation of UNRWA’s privileges and immunities as a United Nations (UN) agency carrying out a humanitarian mission in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Indonesia reaffirmed the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice dated 22 October 2025, which stated that Israel is obliged to support the presence of the UN in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including UNRWA as a humanitarian agency with an irreplaceable role. The Advisory Opinion also affirmed Israel’s obligation to respect the privileges and immunities of the UN in accordance with international law.
Moreover, Indonesia considers the implementation of Israeli national laws and regulations that obstruct UNRWA’s humanitarian assistance operations to be a violation of international obligations. These obligations are particularly outlined in the UN Charter and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.
The Indonesian government also calls on Israel to respect international humanitarian law and international law comprehensively, including by ensuring the protection of UN facilities and personnel carrying out humanitarian duties in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to continuously supporting the role of UNRWA and international efforts to protect the Palestinian people and uphold international law.
