Malaysian Police Investigate MMEA Shooting of Five Indonesian Citizens

KBRN, Jakarta: The Selangor Police in Malaysia has committed to conducting a thorough, swift, and transparent investigation into the shooting of five Indonesian citizens on January 24, 2025.
The shooting incident involved Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) personnel firing upon Indonesian citizens who were allegedly attempting to leave Malaysian waters illegally.
"On January 31, 2025, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur met with the Selangor Police Chief, who assured us of a comprehensive, swift, and transparent investigation, including into the actions of the MMEA personnel involved," said Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a written statement on Monday, February 3, 2025.
Judha explained that among the three articles used in the investigation, one article from the Firearms Act 1960 is being used to investigate the MMEA officer. Specifically, the officer is being investigated for alleged misuse of a firearm.
"For the investigation, the MMEA officers on patrol during the incident have been relieved of their duties. The MMEA has expressed willingness to cooperate with the Royal Malaysian Police in the investigation process," Judha said.
As a result of the January 24 shooting incident, one Indonesian citizen, Basri from Riau province, died and was buried in his hometown of Bengkalis, Riau. Meanwhile, another victim, MH from Aceh, is now stable and has been transferred to a general ward.
One other victim remains in intensive care and is under close medical supervision. Two other Indonesian victims, MZ and HA from Riau province, who were also injured in the shooting, have been discharged and are assisting the police with their investigation. ***
