Total of 16 Indonesians Died in Shipwreck in Malaysia: Govt

RRI.CO.ID, Kuala Lumpur – The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that 16 Indonesian citizens died in a shipwreck carrying 37 Indonesians off Pangkor Island, Perak, Malaysia, on May 11, 2026.

In an official statement on Friday, May 29, the Ministry said that this figure was based on data from Teluk Intan Hospital. The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is working with the Indonesian police to trace the families of the victims.

At the same time, DNA samples are being collected from the families of the deceased Indonesians. Indonesia, through the Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, continues to monitor the situation and maintain active communication with the victims’ families.

The Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has obtained the latest information regarding the condition of the Indonesians and has been given access to meet directly with the 18 survivors. The other five Indonesian survivors are still undergoing questioning by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

The Ministry is coordinating with Malaysian authorities, including the PDRM and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). Additionally, coordination is underway with the Public Health Department (JKM) and Teluk Intan Hospital.

The meeting with the 18 Indonesians was held to verify their identities, gather further information, and ensure their well-being. The survivors hail from Aceh, North Sumatra, the Riau Islands, Lampung, Banten, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and Southeast Sulawesi.

Meanwhile, five Indonesians underwent further questioning by the PDRM in relation to the illegal migrant smuggling operation. All the Indonesian survivors are in good health.
