RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Durian (Durio zibethinus) is one of Indonesia’s most iconic tropical fruits, recognized worldwide for its distinctive aroma and rich nutritional content. Beyond its culinary popularity, durian contains vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, polyphenols, flavonoids, and sulfur-containing compounds that contribute to its biological properties.
According to research published in the journal Food Chemistry, durian contains various antioxidant compounds, including phenolic substances and carotenoids. These compounds contribute to the fruit’s ability to neutralize free radicals and provide protective effects against oxidative stress.
The nutritional value of durian makes it an important energy source. The fruit contains carbohydrates, dietary fiber, potassium, and vitamins that contribute to daily nutritional intake when consumed in appropriate portions.
Durian peel and seeds have also attracted scientific attention because they contain bioactive compounds. Researchers have explored these parts as potential sources of antioxidants and functional ingredients, reducing agricultural waste through value-added applications.
In the cosmetic and biotechnology sectors, durian-derived compounds are being investigated for their antioxidant potential. Plant-based antioxidants from fruit waste are increasingly studied as sustainable ingredients for natural product development.
Despite its nutritional benefits, durian consumption should remain balanced because the fruit is relatively high in calories and carbohydrates. Individuals managing specific dietary conditions should consider portion size and overall nutritional intake.
