RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) is one of the country’s most valuable spice commodities with a long history of culinary and traditional medicinal use. This aromatic bark contains cinnamaldehyde, polyphenols, flavonoids, and essential oils that contribute to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and potential metabolic health effects.

A study published in the journal Food Chemistry in 2012 reported that cinnamon species contain high levels of polyphenolic compounds with strong antioxidant activity.

These compounds help reduce oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals and protecting biological molecules from damage.

One of the most researched aspects of cinnamon is its potential role in glucose metabolism. Scientific studies have investigated cinnamon compounds, particularly cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols, for their influence on insulin sensitivity and carbohydrate metabolism. Some clinical studies suggest potential benefits, although results vary depending on dosage and study design.

Cinnamon also demonstrates antimicrobial activity due to its essential oil components. Research has shown that cinnamaldehyde can interfere with microbial cell membranes, creating opportunities for applications in food preservation and natural antimicrobial formulations.

In addition to health applications, cinnamon is widely used in cosmetic and personal care industries. Its aromatic compounds make it valuable for fragrances, while antioxidant properties encourage exploration as a botanical ingredient in skincare products.

Despite its potential benefits, excessive intake of concentrated cinnamon supplements should be avoided. High consumption of coumarin-containing cinnamon products may pose risks, particularly for individuals with liver concerns. Appropriate dosage and product quality remain important considerations.
