RRI.CO.ID, Gorontalo City – The Gorontalo Provincial Health, Population Control, and Family Planning Agency has reported a rise in newly detected HIV-AIDS cases at the start of 2026.

Based on the latest validation results released on Monday, April 27, 2026, 52 new cases were identified between January and March 2026. This figure marks a significant increase compared to the previous two-month period.

Head of the Health, Population Control, and Family Planning Agency, Anang S. Otoluwa, conveyed that when combined with the 31 cases recorded in November-December 2025, the total number of new detections over the last two periods has reached 83 cases.

"This total comprises 63 HIV cases and 20 AIDS cases, with Gorontalo City recording the highest distribution at 37 cases," he said.

Demographically, the majority of those affected are within the productive age group. A total of 45 cases were found in the 25–49 age range, followed by 34 cases among adolescents and young adults (15–24 years), and 4 cases in individuals over the age of 50.

In terms of professional background, the highest incidence was found among private-sector employees with 22 cases. An alarming trend was also observed regarding education levels, as students and university students accounted for 15 of the total new cases.

Historically, cumulative HIV-AIDS cases in Gorontalo Province from 2001 through March 2026 have reached 1,538. This total includes 913 HIV cases and 625 AIDS cases. Out of these thousands of cases, 510 deaths have been recorded, while one individual moved out of the province and 53 cases were declared lost to follow-up.

Regarding medical intervention, 739 people are currently undergoing active Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. However, the agency noted that 39 others have yet to begin their therapy.

Anang assessed that the higher rate of HIV detection compared to AIDS serves as a positive indicator of an increasingly robust early detection system.

"We continue to strengthen screening and education so that cases can be found sooner, allowing for immediate treatment and the suppression of further transmission," said Anang in an official release, as quoted by infopublik.id.

The agency urges the public to increase awareness regarding routine health check-ups and calls for an end to the negative stigma against people living with HIV (ODHIV). Compliance with Antiretroviral therapy is emphasized as the primary key to maintaining a patient's quality of life and breaking the chain of transmission within the community. ***
