Central Papua Probes Dogiyai Measles Cases to Prevent Outbreak

RRI.CO.ID, Nabire - The epidemiology team from Central Papua’s Health Agency moved quickly to trace measles transmission in Modio Village, Central Mapia District, Dogiyai Regency, Central Papua on Saturday, 19 July 2026. The fact- and data-driven investigation includes case verification, contact tracing and specimen collection following Ministry of Health guidelines to prevent a potential outbreak.
Head of Surveillance and Immunization at the Central Papua Health Agency, Yohanes Kayame, said teams were deployed to conduct epidemiological investigations and provide technical assistance alongside the Dogiyai District Health Agency and local Community Health Center (Puskesmas) staff.
“The team’s formation demonstrates our commitment to strengthening early-warning systems. Every incoming report is followed up with investigations based on accurate facts and data, not assumptions, to prevent an outbreak,” he said in Nabire on Saturday, 19 July 2026.
Yohanes said the teams verify and validate cases, trace disease histories, search for additional cases, check immunization status and collect samples in line with Ministry of Health protocols. Officers also provide public education on measles symptoms, the importance of completing routine immunizations and preventive measures to curb transmission in the community.
He added the response is being used to build capacity among subdistrict and puskesmas health workers, so they can respond to infectious diseases more quickly, accurately and independently.
“This activity also serves as training and capacity strengthening for health staff at the district and puskesmas levels, so responses to infectious diseases can be faster, more precise and self-reliant in the future,” said Yohanes, as quoted by Antara.
During the investigation the team encountered some resistance from families regarding inquiries into the case of a child who died. Through a persuasive approach and with support from community leaders and the village administration, the investigation proceeded according to procedure.
The Central Papua Health Agency urged residents to remain calm but vigilant. People were asked to bring family members who develop fever with a red rash to the nearest health facility immediately for early treatment.
Yohanes also reminded the public of the importance of completing children’s routine immunizations as the most effective measure to prevent measles spread.
“Complete the immunization schedules for our children, because that is the most effective protection. With cooperation from all elements, we will ensure maximum response and prevent wider spread,” he said. ***
