RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta People with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) can still carry out fasting comfortably as long as they manage their diet and lifestyle properly. GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as chest pain, a burning sensation in the chest, and nausea.

Citing various sources, during fasting, changes in eating patterns may trigger a relapse of symptoms if not managed carefully. One important step is not skipping the pre-dawn meal (sahur). At sahur, people with GERD are advised to consume balanced and nutritious foods such as complex carbohydrates and low-fat protein to prevent the stomach from being empty for too long.

It is also important to avoid foods that can trigger acid reflux, such as spicy, sour, and fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine, and caffeinated drinks like coffee. When breaking the fast, people with GERD are advised not to overeat. They can start with warm water or dates, then pause before eating the main meal so the stomach is not overloaded suddenly.

The habit of going to sleep immediately after eating should also be avoided. Experts recommend waiting about two to three hours after eating before lying down to prevent stomach acid from rising into the esophagus.

In addition, the head should be positioned higher than the stomach during sleep by using an extra pillow. This position can help reduce the risk of acid reflux while sleeping.

People with GERD are also encouraged to maintain adequate hydration by drinking water gradually from iftar until sahur.

Another factor to consider is stress management. Stress is known to increase stomach acid production, which can worsen GERD symptoms.

If symptoms recur, sufferers can drink warm water, loosen tight clothing, and take stomach medications such as antacids according to a doctor’s recommendation.

With proper diet management, a healthy lifestyle, and appropriate treatment, people with GERD can still observe fasting more comfortably and safely.
