RRI.CO.ID, Banda Aceh - Conservation efforts in Aceh have achieved a monumental milestone following the confirmed birth of a new wild-born Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) at the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center, located within the Jantho Nature Reserve (CA Jantho) in Aceh Besar Regency, Aceh.
The breakthrough highlights the profound success of long-term rehabilitation programs in returning rescued wildlife back to their natural habitats.
The post-release monitoring team from the Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari–Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (YEL-SOCP) officially confirmed the birth on May 22, 2026. Field monitors observed the mother, named Bulan, moving actively through the forest canopy while securely cradling her newborn.
Bulan exhibited highly active movements and protective maternal behavior, with the infant maintaining a tight grip on her chest. The baby orangutan, identified as a male, is estimated to be around one month old and appears to be in excellent health.
To commemorate the significant ecological event, the Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, personally bestowed the name Badar, meaning full moon, upon the newborn male. Minister Antoni expressed that Badar's arrival symbolizes a fresh beacon of hope for the future survival and sustainability of wild orangutan populations.
"This birth is proof that through consistent habitat protection, we can restore the population of endangered endemic species. Hopefully, Badar can grow healthily in the wild and bring a new glimmer of hope for the sustainability of our invaluable forest ecosystem," Minister Raja Juli Antoni said in a press release issued on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, as quoted on the ministry's official website.
The journey of the mother, Bulan, represents a profound victory over the illegal wildlife trade. She was originally rescued from illegal wildlife traffickers in Kutacane, Southeast Aceh Regency, back in 2014 when she was merely two years old.
Following her rescue, Bulan underwent an intensive four-year rehabilitation program at the YEL-SOCP Orangutan Quarantine and Rehabilitation Center in Sibolangit, North Sumatra.
After successfully re-learning vital survival skills, she was officially released into the wild at the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center inside CA Jantho in 2018. She has lived completely free in her natural habitat ever since.
The Head of the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Ujang Wisnu Barata, pointed out that Bulan's transition from a captive victim of trade to a successful mother in the wild proves that structured rehabilitation and release strategies yield concrete results for population recovery.
"This birth demonstrates how orangutans once victims of the wildlife trade can be given a second chance to live and reproduce in the wild. Successes like this can only continue if their habitat remains protected," Ujang Wisnu Barata emphasized.
Conservationists underscore that this successful reproduction serves as a crucial ecological indicator that rehabilitated orangutans are fully capable of adapting, surviving, and propagating their species when returned to nature.
The event stands as a powerful reminder to the global community regarding the urgency of protecting natural forest habitats and intensifying law enforcement against wildlife crimes to ensure the continuity of such conservation victories. ***
