RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has reported the successful birth of a Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) infant at the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center within the Jantho Nature Reserve, Aceh Besar Regency, ahead of the 81st anniversary of Indonesian Independence Day.

Field teams from the Post Release Monitoring (PRM) unit confirmed the discovery on July 29, 2026, when observers spotted an adult female orangutan named Wenda carrying her newborn female infant, estimated to be under a week old.

Wenda was originally brought to the Sibolangit Orangutan Quarantine and Rehabilitation Center in 2009 at one year old before being transferred to Jantho and released into the wild in 2014.

The birth of the endangered primate highlights the success of collaborative conservation programs between government agencies, local communities, and conservation partners.

Authorities noted that long-term monitoring, habitat preservation, and anti-poaching measures remain vital to ensuring the survival and adaptation of rehabilitated orangutans in their natural environments.

Forestry leadership and regional conservation officials emphasized that population growth among protected species reflects the success of habitat protection and anti-trafficking enforcement.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni described the birth as a significant milestone for regional ecosystem conservation.

"The arrival of this orangutan infant is a symbol of new hope for the invaluable sustainability of forest ecosystems, the government is committed to continuously strengthening conservation efforts, taking firm action against illegal wildlife trade, and ensuring that every released orangutan has the opportunity to live, adapt, and breed in its natural habitat," Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated in Jakarta on Saturday, August 1, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Head of the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Ujang Wisnu Barata, highlighted the collective responsibility involved in safeguarding protected reserves.

"The birth of an orangutan infant in the Jantho Nature Reserve is not only good news, but also a reminder that preserving forests means preserving life, Orangutans can only survive if their habitat remains pristine. This success is a shared effort, and we believe that through synergy among all parties, the future of the Sumatran orangutan and its habitat will remain protected," Ujang explained. ***
