RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - The Diponegoro University (Undip) in Semarang< Central Java, has taken a major step toward strengthening its global academic presence by establishing a double degree program in chemical engineering with Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT), China.
Rector Suharnomo described the collaboration as a strategic move to position Undip as a world-class university. The agreement, signed in a hybrid ceremony via Zoom, marks a milestone in expanding Undip’s international network and aligning its chemical engineering education with global standards.
The program follows a 2+2 model, with students completing their first two years at Undip before continuing the next two years at BUCT under an integrated curriculum jointly designed by both institutions. BUCT is recognized as a leading university in chemical engineering and research-driven innovation in China.
Suharnomo emphasized that the partnership is not limited to student mobility but also opens opportunities for joint research, faculty exchanges, and technology transfer.
“To become a world-class university, global partnerships are key to improving academic quality and expanding international contributions,” he said, as quoted by Antara, adding that the program will provide students with cross-cultural academic experiences, enhance competitiveness, and build adaptive skills for graduates.
BUCT President Wang Feng welcomed the collaboration, noting that it reflects the long-standing ties between the two institutions, strengthened since Undip’s delegation visited BUCT last year.
“This double degree program is an important achievement in deepening inter-university cooperation. It is more than an academic agreement, it is a shared commitment to nurturing top talent in chemical engineering with an international perspective,” he concluded.
The initiative will harmonize curricula and teaching systems while reinforcing educational ties between Indonesia and China. Looking ahead, both universities plan to expand cooperation into joint research, faculty exchanges, and closer integration between academia and industry.
For Undip, the partnership represents a significant leap in its internationalization agenda, ensuring students gain global exposure while contributing to innovation and development in Indonesia’s higher education sector. ***
