RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The University of Indonesia (UI) and South Korean Kyungpook National University (KNU) Korea are joining forces to advance artificial intelligence (AI), multidisciplinary research, and academic programs through a double degree initiative.
UI’s Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Mahmud Sudibandriyo, emphasized the university’s openness to international collaboration.
“We are ready to develop cooperation in various forms. We hope this meeting leads to more concrete implementation for both institutions,” he said in Depok on Friday, May 29, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
KNU’s Vice President for Research, Jung Soon Ki, underscored the need to move beyond administrative agreements toward tangible academic and research collaboration.
“Now is the right time to shift toward meaningful academic and research cooperation. We hope this partnership provides valuable global experiences for students and faculty,” he noted.
KNU introduced its AI Transformation Initiative (AIX), a strategy to integrate AI into education, research, and industry, with a focus on global talent development in AI robotics, future mobility, semiconductors, and safety AI.
The two universities also discussed opportunities for double degree programs, enabling students to earn two master’s degrees within two years and pursue doctoral studies at KNU with full scholarships.
Other areas of cooperation include joint research, faculty exchange, student mobility, joint lectures, and AI+X programs that integrate AI with engineering, health, industry, agriculture, and social sciences.
Founded in 1946 in Daegu, KNU is recognized as a leading research hub in South Korea, with strong contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As a first step, UI and KNU agreed to focus their collaboration on AI and computer science before expanding into other fields. The partnership underscores UI’s commitment to strengthening its international academic network. ***
