RRI.CO.ID, Medan – Measures to address the impact of the 2025 floods on the education sector and other strategic public services are being implemented effectively. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology and Commission X of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, have affirmed the statement during a recess working visit for the Third Session Period of the 2025–2026 Legislative Year.

The affirmation was conveyed at the Office of the Education Quality Assurance Agency (BPMP) of North Sumatra Province on Tuesday, 24 February 2026. In a press statement issued by the ministry, Director General of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Ahmad Najib Burhani, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to strengthening the role of higher education institutions and the research ecosystem in supporting post-disaster recovery efforts grounded in science and innovation.

Director General Najib stated that, overall, higher education activities in flood-affected areas have continued to operate normally, as the majority of campuses were not located in directly impacted zones. Nevertheless, particular attention has been directed toward affected students and their families, especially with regard to financial assistance and the continuity of their studies.

“We ensure that higher education institutions are present not only during the emergency response phase, but also throughout recovery and prevention efforts. Financial support for affected students, along with the strengthening of disaster mitigation research, constitutes a sustainable measure to enhance the resilience of the higher education system in facing similar situations in the future,” Najib said.

As part of the emergency response and recovery measures, by the end of December 2025, the ministry had established 28 Campus Command Posts across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. These posts were coordinated by LLDIKTI Region XII (Aceh), LLDIKTI Region I (North Sumatra), and LLDIKTI Region X (West Sumatra and Jambi).

A total of 61 higher education institutions participated, operating 68 service centers on the ground, including psychosocial support and emergency education services. Additionally, 2,260 doctors, 1,267 healthcare personnel, and 219 volunteers were deployed.

Furthermore, Head of the Recess Working Visit Delegation of Commission X of the House of Representatives, Sofyan Tan, underscored that the floods in North Sumatra had generated widespread impacts on communities and disrupted strategic public services across multiple sectors.

“The impact of the floods has extended beyond the education sector, encompassing primary, secondary, and higher education to include library services, cultural advancement and preservation, youth and sports development, as well as the quality of disaster-related statistical data. Therefore, we seek to ensure effective coordination between central and regional authorities, and that regional input serves as a foundation for strengthening national policy,” he stated.
