RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is developing a Regional-Based Shrimp Farming Pond (BUBK) in Kebumen, Central Java, as a model for modern shrimp farming to increase the production of national fishery commodities. The program is one of the government's strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian shrimp in the global market.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Ayu Rahmawati, said that BUBK Kebumen is a flagship program of the KKP designed to promote sustainable shrimp production. According to her, shrimp is one of Indonesia's main fishery export commodities that has great potential in the international market.

"Indonesia has the largest shrimp farm located in Kebumen. The Kebumen BUBK has become one of the KKP's flagship programs to boost national shrimp production, considering that shrimp is one of the largest and most relied-upon fishery export commodities for Indonesia in the global market," Ayu Rahmawati said, Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

BUBK Kebumen was developed on an area of 100 hectares that was previously unproductive shrimp farming land. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) then built a modern aquaculture area with shrimp farming management technology, and it currently operates 24 hectares of effective ponds consisting of 139 production plots.

In the 8th production cycle, BUBK Kebumen recorded a total shrimp production of around 254.5 tons. This production came from several harvesting stages, namely the second harvest on 37 plots with an output of around 75 tons, and the final harvest on 70 plots with an estimated production of 90 tons.

In addition to increasing national shrimp production, the development of BUBK Kebumen also has an economic impact on the surrounding community by absorbing 645 local workers. This number consists of 145 permanent workers and 500 daily casual workers.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) stated that the development of the modern shrimp farming area also encourages the economic growth of the community thru various supporting sectors, such as culinary businesses, daily necessity stores, suppliers of shrimp farming production facilities, transportation, and accommodation services around the area.
