RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Trade is encouraging Indonesian businesses to seize export opportunities for furniture products in India. Indonesia highlighted this opportunity through its participation in INDEXPLUS 2026 in New Delhi from August 7 to 9, 2026.
At the exhibition, the Indonesia Pavilion recorded transactions worth USD 151,000, equivalent to around IDR 2.65 billion. It also secured potential transactions valued at USD2.26 million, or approximately IDR39.7 billion.
Director General of National Export Development at the Ministry of Trade, Fajarini Puntodewi, said INDEXPLUS 2026 served as an opportunity to strengthen the presence of Indonesian furniture in the Indian market.
“The Ministry of Trade encourages Indonesian furniture businesses, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to study Indian consumer trends for furniture products and further boost exports,” Director General of National Export Development at the Ministry of Trade Fajarini Puntodewi said, as quoted from an official statement on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
According to Puntodewi, export opportunities are growing as consumer preferences in India’s urban areas continue to change. Consumers in major cities such as Mumbai, the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi, and Bengaluru are increasingly turning to minimalist, modern, and Scandinavian-industrial furniture designs.
Head of the Indonesia Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) Chennai, Amesta Yisca Putri, said Indonesian trade representatives in India would continue to help businesses turn export opportunities into concrete deals, including through business matching.
“We actively facilitate direct business matching between businesses and potential buyers in India. This allows us to ensure that potential partnerships are turned into concrete transactions,” Amesta said.
Amesta added that Indonesian furniture has advantages in design, craftsmanship, and the use of premium materials. To improve competitiveness, exporters can also take advantage of the ASEAN-India Free Trade Area (AIFTA) scheme and understand Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification requirements.
“Utilizing preferential tariffs can be one strategy to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the Indian market. Through the AIFTA scheme, Indonesian furniture products can obtain preferential tariffs of up to zero percent, in accordance with applicable regulations,” she said.
In addition to tariffs, exporters need to comply with India’s technical requirements under the BIS. The Indian government has implemented the Furniture (Quality Control) Order 2025 for several furniture products, including office chairs, general-purpose chairs and stools, tables, storage units, beds, and bunk beds.
“Significant market opportunities need to be accompanied by exporters’ readiness to comply with applicable technical requirements and regulations. We are ready to assist businesses in understanding the various requirements for entering the Indian market, so that exports can proceed more smoothly,” Amesta concluded.
