RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - Indonesia's Central Java Province harvested vannamei shrimp from a modern aquaculture facility in Semarang on Monday, July 6, 2026. The harvest highlighted the province's efforts to modernize shrimp farming while supporting sustainable fisheries development.
The harvest took place at the Fish Hatchery and Aquaculture Center managed by the Central Java Marine and Fisheries Agency in the Wijayakusuma Industrial Estate. The facility is designed as a pilot project for revitalizing modern shrimp ponds along Indonesia's northern coastline.
Head of the Central Java Marine and Fisheries Agency, Endi Faiz Effendi, said the farm applies a closed cultivation system because it operates within an industrial estate. He explained the technology minimizes water intake while maintaining water quality throughout the cultivation process.
"We use only a small amount of water from outside, then treat it with dolomite, chlorine, and aeration before using it for cultivation." he said.
The 1,561-square-meter pond is expected to produce around 1.3 tons of vannamei shrimp after approximately 82 days of cultivation. The harvested shrimp average 60 shrimp per kilogram and are marketed to meet Indonesia's domestic demand.
The hatchery has also recorded positive performance, achieving approximately 72 percent of its annual regional revenue target during the first half of 2026. The success demonstrates the economic potential of modern aquaculture supported by efficient production systems.
Governor of Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi, called for expanding fish and shrimp hatchery centers across the province to strengthen food security. He also encouraged greater assistance for farmers through quality seed production, cultivation guidance, and marketing support.
The provincial government is coordinating with the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to revitalize around 72,000 hectares of traditional ponds along Central Java's northern coast. The program aims to optimize inactive ponds and increase long-term aquaculture productivity.
