RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Ma’ruf Amin, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Indonesian Ulema Council’s National Sharia Board (DSN-MUI) and Indonesia’s 13th Vice President, emphasized that the transformation of the sharia economy is aimed at making it part of Indonesia’s national economic mainstream. He said the target is projected to be achieved over a 25-year period.

Ma’ruf stated that developing the sharia economy requires a gradual process and a sustainable long-term strategy. “Sharia economic development cannot be achieved instantly. We have a 25-year target to align it with sharia principles fully,” he said after attending a series of DSN-MUI board plenary meetings in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

He explained that the initial phase will focus on improving public literacy on Sharia economics. The next stage will prioritize strengthening quality and expanding the market share of sharia-based economic activities.

“Literacy is essential so that people understand that engaging in sharia-based economic activities is not merely an option, but a necessity. When a proper and sharia-compliant system is available, the use of non-sharia systems should be discontinued,” Ma’ruf said.

According to him, Sharia principles, including the prohibition of manipulation, gharar (excessive uncertainty), and gambling, underpin a healthy economic system. Adherence to these principles, he added, will help strengthen confidence among businesses and investors.

“If sharia guidelines are implemented, God willing, there will be no manipulation, and trust will grow, both from domestic and foreign investors,” he said.

Ma’ruf emphasized that strengthening the sharia economy requires synergy among various stakeholders. Collaboration between regulators, industry players, and the public is crucial for the ecosystem to develop optimally.

“The sharia economy is an ecosystem. DSN-MUI acts as a driving force through its fatwas (religious rulings), but it must be supported collectively by regulators, industry actors, and the community,” he said.

He hopes that the long-term strategy will strengthen the role of the national sharia economy and contribute to public welfare and economic stability.

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) also reiterated the importance of strengthening the national sharia economic ecosystem, emphasizing that collaboration among all stakeholders is essential.

“There are three keys that we must implement going forward. We must become a unifying platform, a melting point,” said DSN-MUI Chairman Cholil Nafis.

He explained that this reflects the institution’s strategic role in overseeing the sharia economy. “First, tafahum, we must understand one another. Second, ta’awun, we must help one another. And third, taghafur, we must be tolerant of one another,” he said.​ (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)​
