RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Irsan Sosiawan, highlighted the importance of accurately targeting the social responsibility (CSR) programs of Freeport Indonesia and AMMAN Mineral Nusa Tenggara for communities surrounding the mining areas. He conveyed this during a hearing with the companies at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Freeport Indonesia, operating the well-known Grasberg copper mine in Central Papua, is majority owned by the state-owned holding MIND ID, with the U.S.-based Freeport McMoRan taking a significant minority. Meanwhile, AMMAN Mineral Nusa Tenggara, operating a gold and copper mine in West Nusa Tenggara, is owned by the Indonesian private company Amman Mineral Internasional.

Opening his remarks, Irsan commended the increasing production trend demonstrated by the two companies in their presentations, from small to large scale, which he considered in line with the nation's production targets. He also commended the two companies' contributions to state revenue.

"I commend the performance of both companies, which have contributed to the nation and state revenue," Irsan said, as quoted by the DPR website.

However, he emphasized that equally important is the continued attention to the communities surrounding the mining areas, which he said was a key focus of the House. He noted that the two companies also serve as mineral suppliers to another state-owned company, Aneka Tambang (ANTAM), for gold smelting, so their impact on the surrounding communities must be continuously monitored.

"So, I just want people to remember to pay attention to the social community around the mine," he said.

Highlighting the magnitude of Freeport's social investment, which he said reaches around US$100 million per year, Irsan emphasized that the program should not stop at budget allocation. He said it should ensure that the target community truly feels its benefits.

"I see that PT Freeport, in this material, invests approximately US$100 million per year, sir, for the social community, and this is very good, but it's important to remember that mitigation efforts must be targeted," he said.

On the other hand, Irsan emphasized that achieving production and state revenue targets must be accompanied by a sense of ownership and tangible benefits for the local community. He also expressed his hope that the people of Papua, especially those in the hometowns of the two House members from the local electoral districts, could directly feel the benefits of Freeport's presence in boosting local spirits and the local economy.

Irsan also offered similar feedback to AMMAN Mineral Nusa Tenggara, stating that the company's educational, health, and even larger programs should benefit the communities surrounding the company's operations. Hence, they can also benefit from the educational, health, and even larger programs surrounding the company.

In its presentation, PT Freeport Indonesia reported a 2025 social investment realization of US$117.1 million, with the largest allocations going to the education (36%) and health (18%) sectors, followed by the economic (15%) and culture-sports (15%) sectors. The company also noted its contribution to the creation of 440,040 job opportunities, 286,280 of which are in the Papua region, as well as a social investment commitment averaging US$100 million per year until 2041.
