RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia officially launched the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2026 on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, positioning the forum as a platform to align policy, industry, and investment as the country accelerates its energy transition agenda.
The summit was launched by Energy and Mineral Resources Deputy Minister Yuliot Tanjung, who said GHES 2026 would serve as a strategic venue to consolidate Indonesia’s hydrogen initiatives and connect them with global hydrogen developments.
“Hydrogen has a strategic role in supporting the shift away from fossil fuels, as it is a zero-carbon energy carrier alongside electricity,” Yuliot said at the launch, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s official website.
Indonesia has identified hydrogen and ammonia as key components of its long-term energy transition, with the government targeting net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier.
GHES 2026 is expected to support this target by fostering coordination between policymakers, industry players, and international stakeholders.
Yuliot said the summit would focus not only on climate commitments but also on practical pathways to integrate hydrogen into Indonesia’s energy system and industrial base. He noted that hydrogen already plays a role in domestic industries, particularly fertilizer production and oil refining.
Indonesia’s hydrogen consumption currently stands at around 1.75 million tons per year, with the majority used in urea production, ammonia processing, and oil refineries, according to data from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
Beyond existing industrial use, the government sees hydrogen as a solution for sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, including long-distance transport, shipping, aviation, steel production, and industrial heating.
Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Energy Ministry, Eniya Listiani Dewi, said GHES 2026 would also support the implementation of Indonesia’s National Hydrogen Roadmap, which outlines a phased development based on industrial readiness and energy availability.
“Hydrogen development is not only an instrument for decarbonization, but also a foundation for long-term economic and industrial transformation,” Eniya said.
She added that the ministry is targeting an increase in green hydrogen production as part of its 2026 performance indicators, in line with the national energy policy and the broader energy transition framework.
Indonesia’s geographic position along major global trade routes, combined with its abundant renewable energy potential, provides a strong basis for developing hydrogen and ammonia value chains, Yuliot said.
He added that these advantages could enable Indonesia to play a more significant role in the Asia-Pacific hydrogen market.
GHES 2026 is expected to bring together government officials, industry leaders, technology providers, and researchers to discuss policy frameworks, investment readiness, and technological development related to hydrogen and ammonia.
The government hopes the summit will strengthen cross-sector coordination and accelerate hydrogen adoption, particularly from low-carbon and renewable sources.
“With GHES 2026, we want to ensure that hydrogen development in Indonesia is well-coordinated, economically viable, and aligned with our national priorities,” Yuliot said. ***
