RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is strengthening its coordination with UNESCO to enhance the country's contribution in the fields of education, science, culture, communication, and information at the international level. The move is expected to broaden Indonesia's role in supporting UNESCO's programs while advancing diplomacy through education and culture.

The statement was made by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, following the signing ceremony for the handover of the Secretariat of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO (KNIU) from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to the Ministry of Culture in Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026. The transfer follows a newly issued Presidential Regulation designating the Ministry of Culture as the coordinating institution for the KNIU.

Fadli said the institutional transition is part of the government's effort to strengthen Indonesia's coordination with UNESCO. "The handover of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to the Ministry of Culture is the implementation of the newly issued Presidential Regulation, which designates the ministry responsible for cultural affairs as the coordinator of the KNIU," he said.

Although the Ministry of Culture now serves as the coordinating institution, Fadli emphasized that UNESCO-related programs will continue to involve multiple ministries and government agencies. He noted that UNESCO's mandate spans education, science, culture, communication, and information, making cross-sector collaboration essential.

According to the minister, coordination among ministries and institutions will continue under the guidance of the government, including the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs. "This is a collaborative effort involving more than a dozen ministries and institutions because UNESCO's scope of work covers a wide range of sectors," he said.

Fadli expressed hope that the new Presidential Regulation would strengthen the institutional framework and improve national coordination in implementing UNESCO-related programs. He said stronger coordination would enable Indonesia to make more meaningful contributions across UNESCO's areas of responsibility.

"We hope that the Presidential Regulation, which provides a stronger institutional position for the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO, will further enhance coordination among ministries and agencies so that Indonesia's contribution through UNESCO becomes more tangible and visible at the international level," Fadli said.

He added that the strengthened coordination is expected not only to enhance Indonesia's role within UNESCO but also to advance the country's education, science, culture, communication, and information sectors through closer international cooperation. The government remains committed to using global partnerships as a means of supporting national development while expanding Indonesia's contribution to the international community.
