RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) called the office of the country's Directorate General of Immigration in Bali to strengthen its immigration performance and governance to address the dynamics of international tourism and increasing global mobility in the island province. Residence permits and detention (temporary accommodation for foreign nationals who violate immigration laws) are among the areas that should be strengthened.

This emerged during a meeting between Commission XIII of the House and the head of the office in Denpasar on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Member of the DPR, Marinus Gea, who chaired the meeting, stated that strengthening immigration performance and governance is crucial to increasing the effectiveness of oversight, law enforcement, and early detection of violations by foreign nationals.

"Commission XIII encourages the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Immigration in Bali to collaborate with the local government to increase public participation in the process of monitoring foreign nationals, to strengthen early detection, reporting, and immigration supervision," Marinus said at the meeting, as quoted from the House's press release on Wednesday.

Marinus stated that the commission praised the Directorate General's achievement on non-tax revenue in Bali for the January-April 2026. The House said the revenue showed a positive trend.

Significant increases were seen at the immigration offices in Ngurah Rai, Denpasar, Singaraja, Klungkung, and Tabanan. Nevertheless, the House reminded Immigration officials to continue accelerating realization in the following period to ensure optimal annual targets are achieved.

Marinus, of the center-left Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), reminded the office to anticipate the increasing potential of transnational crime involving foreign nationals. This type of crime can cause significant economic losses to the region.

Therefore, the House views early detection and decisive action against perpetrators as necessary. The step is a top priority to ensure that immigration functions remain aligned with efforts to protect national interests in Indonesia's economy and security.
