RRI.CO.ID, Denpasar - Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has officially transformed into the starting point for a monumental spiritual journey as it welcomed 50 monks from Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia for the Indonesia Walk for Peace (IWFP) 2026.
This arrival marks the commencement of the Thudong ritual, a grueling yet sacred pilgrimage where the monks will traverse hundreds of kilometers on foot across Indonesia to advocate for global harmony and religious tolerance.
Landing late Thursday night, May 7, 2026, at 9:30 p.m. local time via AirAsia flight AK374 from Kuala Lumpur, the delegation was met with a respectful reception organized by airport authorities. General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Nugroho Jati, emphasized the significance of Bali serving as the entry point for this mission.
“I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport extends a warm welcome to all monks participating in the IWFP. We are honored to be a part of the arrival of these monks who will begin their Thudong spiritual journey,” said Jati in Denpasar on Friday, May 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He further expressed pride in the airport’s role, noting that the event reinforces Bali’s reputation as a world-class destination that upholds diversity, harmony, and spirituality.
The journey is not merely a physical feat but a powerful symbolic gesture. Setting off from the Island of the Gods, the 50 monks are scheduled to trek through various regions in East Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta, eventually concluding their pilgrimage at the majestic Borobudur Temple in Magelang to coincide with Vesak Day celebrations.
According to Jati, their presence serves as a timely reminder for the modern world. “The presence of the monks in Bali brings a positive message about the importance of maintaining peace, harmony, and brotherhood in a pluralistic society. We hope this spiritual journey can provide inspiration to many parties.”
To ensure the monks’ transition from the terminal to their pilgrimage was seamless, the airport management coordinated closely with multiple agencies. Jati confirmed that the arrival process was highly efficient, supported by Immigration, Customs, and the Quarantine Agency.
“The arrival process for the monks went smoothly thanks to the support of various agencies. We also ensured all airport service facilities were in prime condition,” Jati remarked, as quoted by Antara.
This inclusive service reflects the airport's broader commitment to supporting international cultural and spiritual events that enhance Bali's tourism appeal while fostering a message of universal humanity. ***
