RRI.CO.ID, Mataram - The Rinjani-Lombok Geopark has reaffirmed its global standing, proving that international recognition is about more than breathtaking scenery.
On April 28, 2026, during an international revalidation at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the geopark earned its second Green Card, a distinction that confirms consistent management and tangible impact.
“Maintaining this status is harder than achieving it. This second Green Card reflects the collective hard work of West Nusa Tenggara,” said Rinjani Geopark General Manager Qwadru Putro Wicaksono in Mataram on Tuesday, April 28, as quoted by Antara.
According to Qwadru, the achievement demonstrates that the geopark’s management continues to meet global standards in conservation, education, and community economic empowerment.
UNESCO assessors conducted a comprehensive evaluation, reviewing not only the area’s natural beauty but also its measurable impact on the well-being of communities surrounding Mount Rinjani.
Over the past four years, the geopark has introduced several innovations, particularly in education, by integrating geopark materials into local school curricula and strengthening geological literacy among residents.
Located in an earthquake-prone region, Mount Rinjani now serves as a model for disaster preparedness. The integration of geological knowledge into public awareness programs has improved safety for both tourists and local communities, a practice UNESCO assessors praised as combining science with public protection.
During the certificate handover ceremony in Paris, Indonesian Ambassador to France Mohamad Oemar described Rinjani as a “natural laboratory,” emphasizing its global scientific value and its role in linking research, education, and public welfare. He also referred to Rinjani as a “gem” within Indonesia’s network of global geoparks.
The Indonesian government has pledged continued support for promoting the nation’s geoparks in international forums. The success of Rinjani-Lombok is expected to inspire other Indonesian geoparks preparing for similar revalidation processes. ***
