RRI.CO.ID, Cibinong – The discovery of Indonesia’s biodiversity has entered a new chapter where social media serves as a gateway for scientific advancement. Recently, researchers from the Research Center for Biosystematics and Evolution successfully identified three new species of the genus Homalomena discovered through monitoring digital platforms.
Homalomena is a genus of plants within the aroid family (Araceae) that thrives on the tropical forest floors of Southeast Asia. Among collectors, these plants are often referred to as "forest gems" due to their stunning heart- or arrow-shaped leaves and diverse textures.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the primary draw of Homalomena lies in its ability to adapt to low-light environments. This characteristic makes it a highly popular commodity in the global ornamental plant market.
According to the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)’s press release on Monday April 13, 2026, the discovery began when researchers observed social media posts from collectors. These digital findings featured plants with unusual physical characteristics that had not yet been scientifically identified.
Following an in-depth morphological study, researchers Muhammad Rifqi Hariri and Arifin Surya Dwipa Irsyam confirmed three new species native to North Sumatra. These new species include Homalomena pachyderma with thick leaves, Homalomena pulopadangensis with narrow leaves, and the unique Homalomena uncinata.
Muhammad Rifqi Hariri, explained that these findings highlight the crucial role of the community in uncovering undocumented biodiversity.
"Digital platforms have now become an initial entry point for recognizing the potential of new species, especially regarding ornamental plants circulating among collectors," he stated. This discovery further strengthens Sumatra’s position as a hub for Homalomena diversity within the Malesian region.
