RRI.CO.ID, Ternate - Traditional fishing boats in Ternate, North Maluku have been transformed into vibrant floating canvases, a move aimed at reinforcing regional identity while generating inclusive economic value for coastal communities.
Attending the official unveiling of hand-painted fishing vessels at the Bastiong Fishing Port in Ternate, on Thursday, September 24, Deputy Creative Economy Minister Irene Umar commended the creative integration of visual art with local maritime culture.
"A boat that usually only serves as a vehicle for going out to sea and an active part of a fisherman's routine can now become a storyboards that tells the life of the North Maluku people, when a boat carries a story, people become curious and realize there is something special about this region," she said, as quoted on the ministry's official website.
The visual storytelling project featured artwork by artist Erika Richardo alongside local North Maluku art communities as part of the celebrations for North Maluku Province's 27th anniversary. Utilizing the boats as a medium, the artists combined fine arts and design to depict local flora, indigenous spices, and unique marine life endemic to the region.
Beyond maritime arts, Irene highlighted significant opportunities in the culinary and craft subsectors utilizing local commodities such as moringa (kelor) and walnuts (kenari), which are globally sought after as superfoods.
"North Maluku's potential is extraordinary. There is an abundance of moringa leaves and walnuts here, which externally are known as superfoods and are highly sought after, what we need to do together is collaborate through gotong royong to improve packaging and storytelling so this potential becomes widely recognized, not just nationally but globally," Irene explained.
The Ministry of Creative Economy pledged continued support to develop regional creative ecosystems by strengthening local creator capacities, refining product packaging, and building sustainable partnerships across local administrations, communities, academics, and business sectors. ***
