RRI.CO.ID, Pontianak – The North Pontianak Subdistrict in Pontianak City, West Kalimantan has emerged as the primary focal point for the city’s development. The local administration is implementing a specialized infrastructure approach tailored to the area’s distinct environmental and economic characteristics.
Pontianak is moving away from the commercial-centric models of South or Southeast Pontianak. It is now prioritizing a blend of connectivity, modern waste management, and social welfare projects to revitalize the subdistrict.
As reported by infopublik.id, leading this charge is the completion of Jalan Kebangkitan Nasional, which now serves as a critical segment of the city's outer ring road. Building on this momentum, the administration has allocated IDR 63 billion (USD 3.75 million) for infrastructure this year, an increase from the IDR 56.4 billion (USD 3.35 million) spent in 2024, to upgrade vital routes including Parit Pangeran and Parwasal.
“Thank God, in the first year of my second term, we have completed several infrastructure projects, including Jalan Kebangkitan Nasional, which is now part of the outer ring road,” said Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono, following a communal dawn prayer at Masjid Nushatussolihin on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
The Mayor emphasized that future plans include finishing connecting roads such as Selamat River and increasing public street lighting across North Pontianak’s major intersections.
The development strategy is uniquely dictated by the subdistrict's geography, as approximately 30 percent of the area consists of peatland used for agriculture and conservation. This sector not only feeds the city but serves the wider West Kalimantan Province.
"Certainly, development in North Pontianak is not the same as in South or Southeast Pontianak, where the characteristics are offices and the economy. Therefore, the development is adjusted to the characteristics of the region," explained Edi.
Environmental sustainability is also taking center stage with the construction of an Integrated Waste Management Center at the Batulayang Landfill. Transitioning from open dumping to a sanitary landfill system, the facility will process organic waste while converting inorganic materials into construction supplies like paving blocks.
“In the future, the landfill will only process residues so that the burden is not heavy and waste is no longer a material without value,” noted the Mayor.
In addition to physical infrastructure, the district is integrating national social programs, including a "People's School" on Jalan Flora and 11 kitchens dedicated to President Prabowo’s Nutritious Free Meal program. These initiatives are expected to support low-income families while creating local jobs and a market for regional agricultural products.
Despite the progress, the Mayor acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly the heavy traffic from 500 fuel tankers operating daily in the area. The lack of private parking for these transport fleets has led to rapid road degradation on Jalan Flora and Parwasal.
“What we can do is regulate operational hours, so that they remain orderly. We continue to strive to provide the best service to the community," said Edi, reaffirming the city’s commitment to long-term planning.***
