Berau Promotes Blue Economy Through Fishing Tourism Tournament

RRI.CO.ID, Berau - The fishing tourism trend is coming alive in Berau Regency as 61 international and domestic angling teams, from Bali and North Kalimantan to Malaysia, gathered to compete in the Bupati Cup 2026 Tournament Session II. Held in the Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan, the event served as a strategic promotional stage for Berau to cement its position as a premier sport-fishing destination.
“Berau Regency has abundant marine and fisheries resources, from capture fisheries and aquaculture to fish-processing industries, keeping the coastal grassroots economy moving,” said Berau Regent, Sri Juniarsih Mas, in Berau on Tuesday, 14 July 2026.
She said the region’s natural wealth must be managed responsibly by protecting coastal ecosystems and improving human-resource quality. Those efforts require adequate infrastructure so benefits are felt sustainably.
To boost the marine sector, the Berau Administration is committed to modernizing environmentally friendly fishing gear and developing aquaculture zones. At the same time, it is strengthening small and medium fish-processing enterprises and accelerating downstreaming of local products.
These steps align with regional development policies that position tourism and fisheries as economic drivers so Berau will rely less on mining in the future.
Berau has implemented environmentally responsible resource management practices, such as those on Derawan Island. The next priority is stronger promotion so the world recognizes the region’s nature-based economic potential.
As part of those promotion efforts, the administration staged the Berau Fishing Tournament Bupati Cup. This was the tournament’s second event this year, it took place over two days, Saturday–Sunday, 11–12 July.
As reported by Antara, a total of 61 teams participated in the Derawan Islands waters, competing for total prizes of IDR 166.5 million (about USD 10,400). Competitors came not only from Indonesian regions such as Bali and North Kalimantan but also from Malaysia.
“The participation of teams from other regions and countries proves the growing appeal of the Derawan Islands as a sport-fishing and marine-tourism destination for Berau,” said the regent.
Through the tournament, Derawan Island is expected to gain greater recognition as a world-class marine tourism destination. The event also embodies the blue economy in practice, boosting local welfare while preserving nature.
In the competition results, in the open category Langas FC took first place with 74.80 points and won IDR 40 million (USD 2,500). Second place went to Walesta 2 with 57.70 points and IDR 35 million (USD 2,187.50), while third place went to Fishermans Dream with 56.60 points and IDR 25 million (USD 1,562.50). The top three teams also each received a freezer unit from the Berau regent. ***
