RRI.CO.ID, Serang - Mangrove conservation efforts in the northern coastal region of Banten, specifically in Lontar Village, Pontang Subdistrict, Serang Regency, have emerged as a natural fortress against abrasion and coastal disasters. Since 2013, the local community has proactively engaged in self-funded mangrove rehabilitation in response to massive erosion that had been devastating the shoreline.

The Chairperson of the Lontar Mandiri Joint Business Group, Ropin, said that the severity of the abrasion compelled him to begin planting mangroves, despite having no initial technical expertise. "The abrasion at that time was so massive that I felt moved to rehabilitate the mangroves, even though we faced many failures at the start," he said in Banten on Monday, February 2, 2026.

He explained that the planting method involves using propagules, or mangrove seeds, sown in tidal areas. Results began to show after several weeks. 

"Initially, we were pessimistic, but then one or two seeds began to sprout. From there, we continued planting until we reached hundreds of trees," he added.

Today, the mangroves along the Lontar coast have reached heights of approximately 13 meters. They have proven effective in reducing the impact of strong winds and storms from the north, while serving as a crucial barrier against the abrasion that once threatened residential areas.

The ecological benefits are also being felt by local fishermen. According to Ropin, the mangroves have successfully restored marine habitats. 

"Fishermen no longer need to go far out to sea. They can find shrimp and crabs just 100 meters from the shore," he noted.

Beyond planting, the conservation group has expanded into developing nurseries and implementing silvofishery, integrating mangroves with aquaculture, within pond areas.
