KBRN, Fakfak: West Papua's Fakfak Regency Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Agency Acting Head La Mohdar revealed that not all areas in Fakfak are suitable for seaweed cultivation.

According to him, regions such as Furir Fior Village to Bomberai Subdistrict, including Otoweri Village, are unsuitable for farming due to brackish water conditions.

Despite this, several other locations show strong potential for seaweed farming. He highlighted Kokas Subdistrict, Teluk Patipi Subdistrict, Wartutin Subdistricts, and Pulau Panjang Village as areas with ideal marine conditions for cultivation.

"In these areas, cultivated seaweed has yielded promising results," La Mohdar said. He stressed that local fishermen should continue optimizing seaweed farming to achieve sustainable growth.

La Mohdar also pointed to Fakfak Timur Subdistrict and Karas Subdistrict as other areas previously tested for seaweed farming, both of which delivered positive outcomes.

He noted that these locations gained special attention during a visit by former Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti.

The regional administration is refocusing efforts on expanding seaweed farming in Kokas, an area that once produced harvests in the tens of tons.

"This region has previously seen large-scale harvests, proving its strong economic potential for the local community," La Mohdar explained.

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Agency will continue to push for seaweed farming development in promising regions, aiming to boost fishermen's livelihoods and drive growth in Fakfak's marine and fisheries sector. ***
