RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) has expressed support for the implementation of age restrictions on children’s social media use through Government Regulation (PP) Number 17/2025, also known as PP Tunas. The regulation governs the management of electronic systems for child protection.
IDAI Chairman Piprim Basarah Yanuarso said the medical community has long awaited restrictions on social media use for children. He noted that the negative impact of social media on child development is increasingly concerning and requires serious protective measures.
“This policy has long been awaited by the medical community because the negative impact of social media, particularly on child development, seems increasingly worrying,” Piprim said on Monday, March 30, 2026.
He emphasized that age restrictions are not intended to isolate children from the outside world. Instead, the regulation aims to protect them until they are emotionally and cognitively mature enough to navigate the digital space. “This is a form of collective responsibility. This will prepare children for the digital world,” he added.
Piprim also highlighted the growing issue of children’s screen time and gadget use in recent years. He stressed that children under the age of two should not be exposed to gadgets, as this period is critical for brain development.
IDAI Growth and Development and Pediatrics Coordination Unit Head Fitri Hartanto said age restrictions must be accompanied by stronger parental supervision. She noted that the regulation provides a foundation for better digital parenting.
“Age restrictions are important, but guidance remains crucial so that children can use technology in a healthy and responsible manner,” Fitri said. She emphasized that what must be safeguarded is not only children’s access to technology but also their future. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
