RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Russia continues to lobby Indonesia to cooperate in building nuclear power plants in the country. At a briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, 26 February 2026, Russia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergey Tolchenov, said that his embassy recently met with the National Energy Council (DEN) to discuss the matter.

"We... make the presentation about capabilities in Russian technologies and capabilities of Rosatom (before DEN)," he said, referring to the Russian state-owned nuclear company.

The DEN is an independent state agency responsible for national energy policy. The council is chaired by the President of Indonesia, currently Prabowo Subianto, and consists of several ministers and various stakeholders.

Ambassador Tolchenov also conveyed that Russia has offered various types of floating nuclear power plants for implementation in Indonesia. Russia has also offered small modular reactors (SMRs) as part of the proposal.

"We have a lot of large NPP (nuclear power plant), old style, with new technologies. And Russia is now the only country in the world using a small modular reactor, floating NPP," he said.

Tolchenov said that his country has sent journalists to a floating power plant in the city of Pevek, located in Russia's Far North region. He hoped that another journalist could visit the city this year.

"So, it means that we provide an opportunity to see and to feel how it's going," he said.
