RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s vast geothermal reserves--holding nearly 40 percent of the world’s total--could be the country’s strongest asset in building a reliable power system, according to energy analyst Feiral Rizky Batubara, who also serves as an advisor to the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI).
Speaking in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 7, 2026, Feiral argued that while diversification remains crucial, geothermal’s stability makes it a key pillar in preventing large‑scale blackouts. Feiral stressed that diversifying energy sources is essential to strengthening grid resilience.
“Mitigating blackout risks requires a comprehensive approach, including diversification and the development of power plants capable of delivering stable supply,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
He highlighted geothermal energy as a reliable option, noting its ability to operate continuously, independent of weather conditions, and serve as baseload power.
Indonesia holds an estimated 24 GW of geothermal reserves--around 40 percent of the world’s total--yet only 2.7 GW has been utilized.
Feiral argued that tapping this potential could add 2.5 GW of capacity over the next decade, but challenges remain: high upfront investment, tariff issues, lengthy permitting, and infrastructure readiness.
He called for stronger policy support, including risk‑sharing schemes, long‑term financing, streamlined licensing, and better alignment between power plant development and national grid planning.
“Blackout prevention must be seen as a major agenda for system reinforcement. Geothermal energy, with its wide distribution across Indonesia, can be a key pillar in ensuring reliable supply,” he emphasized. ***
