RRI.CO.ID, Bima City - Traditional Bima handwoven fabrics took center stage at Lawata Beach as local models showcased contemporary textile designs to international visitors participating in the 2026 Sail to Indonesia Yacht Rally.
Organized by the Bima City Tourism Agency, Lawata Fashion Week 2026 featured 112 participants from local training centers, including 57 primary school students, 42 women, and 13 men. The outdoor runway event transformed traditional tenun Bima patterns into modern fashion pieces aimed at international markets.
The fashion showcase served as a cultural centerpiece for 43 foreign tourists arriving on 15 yachts from countries including Sweden, the U.K., and New Zealand. Docked in Bima City from September 11 to 15, the rally represents one of 16 designated maritime stopovers connecting Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara to Mandalika in Lombok.
The itinerary also included local MSME bazaars, classic music performances, and historical tours to the Bima Palace, Ntobo craft center, Dana Traha Royal Cemetery, and the traditional Uma Lengge structures in Wawo.
Local officials and artisans highlighted that integrating traditional textiles into international maritime events expands market reach for local creative industries.
Head of the Bima City Tourism Agency Sukarno detailed the economic strategy behind promoting traditional textiles through fashion.
“Bima’s signature handwoven fabric is not only a part of our cultural heritage but also holds potential as a creative economy product. This approach expands the role of our textiles while ensuring their sustainability within the community,” Sukarno stated in Bima City, as quoted by Antara.
Bima Mayor Rahman H. Abidin emphasized the platform's role in empowering youth and local designers. "This is a stage for creativity, culture, and art for young people to channel their talents and abilities. Through this venue, we hope the works of local designers can penetrate both national and international markets," he noted.
Local craft producers expressed optimism regarding the return of foreign maritime tourists to the region.
"I am very happy that foreign tourists are visiting so that local products can become better known, the hope is that events like this will continue to grow and be held more frequently," Rubiah added during the exhibition at Lawata Beach. ***
