RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN) Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) 2026 officially opened at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. In its 14th edition, the event carries the theme Ulos Simetria, with North Sumatra designated as the Official Theme.

The theme positions Ulos not only as a traditional textile, but also as a symbol of balance, harmony, unity, and innovation. Through this concept, IFW 2026 aims to strengthen the role of local culture as a foundation for the development of Indonesia’s fashion industry.

Indonesia Fashion Week President, Poppy Dharsono, said Ulos Simetria reflects the importance of maintaining a balance between tradition and innovation. In her view, Indonesia’s fashion industry must be able to combine local wisdom with global competitiveness.

“Through the Ulos Simetria theme, we want to affirm that Indonesia’s fashion industry must maintain a balance between tradition and innovation. This requires bridging local wisdom with global competition, as well as preserving cultural values while shaping the future of the creative industry,” said Poppy at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Senayan, Jakarta on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

BTN Indonesia Fashion Week 2026 also serves as a platform for hundreds of designers; brand owners; fashion houses; artisans; and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Their presence is expected to strengthen the national fashion ecosystem while also opening opportunities for collaboration and market development.

On the runway, the richness of Ulos textiles is translated into various contemporary designs without losing its philosophical meaning. The blend shows that cultural heritage can evolve with trends while still carrying economic value.

BTN Network & Retail Funding Director, Rully Setiawan, said Indonesia Fashion Week has now grown into more than just a showcase of creative work. According to him, the event also helps drive the creative economy through increased transactions, investment, tourism, and broader market access.

“Indonesia Fashion Week has grown into more than just a stage for creativity. This event drives the creative economy, brings together business actors, opens market access, increases transactions and investment, strengthens tourism, and supports the national economy,” said Rully.

BTN Indonesia Fashion Week 2026 runs from July 29 to August 3, 2026. Over the five-day event, visitors can enjoy fashion shows, trade exhibitions, creative forums, talk shows, entertainment, and a culinary festival.

Chairperson of the North Sumatra Provincial Regional Craft Council (Dekranasda), Kahiyang Ayu Bobby Nasution, hopes Ulos will become better known internationally. She also encouraged young people and designers to continue developing the Batak cultural heritage.

“We hope Ulos will become more widely recognized around the world, not only in fashion but also in tourism, including among Generation Z. I hope more designers will turn their attention to Ulos because this Batak heritage is very rich,” said Kahiyang.

Deputy Minister of Trade, Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri, said the richness of Indonesia’s traditional textiles is the main strength of the country’s fashion industry. She said that the government continues to expand export markets through the trade attaché network and Indonesia Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) offices in 32 countries.

“The Ministry of Trade sees the main strength of Indonesian fashion as lying in the richness of Nusantara textiles. We also see significant export potential and continue to work on expanding international markets through trade attachés and ITPC offices in 32 countries,” said Dyah. ***
