RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - Indonesia's Special Region of Yogyakarta highlighted its football watch party culture during a public screening on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Hundreds gathered at Teras Malioboro to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal.

The public screening transformed the shopping area into a lively community gathering space overnight. Residents and visitors watched the France versus Spain semifinal together in a warm atmosphere.

The event reflected Indonesia's tradition of nonton bareng, or watching sports together in public spaces. The culture encourages social interaction while making major sporting events accessible to everyone.

Visitors said they learned about the event through social media before coming to Teras Malioboro. Many hoped similar community gatherings would continue beyond international football tournaments.

A local resident, Omen, welcomed the strong public enthusiasm during the event. He also highlighted its benefits for businesses around the venue.

"I honestly didn't expect it to be this crowded. The public enthusiasm is very high. It's also positive because people come here to enjoy food, spend time together, and meet many others," he said.

Food vendor Lupy said the event significantly increased her daily income. She estimated her sales became four times higher than on regular days.

"Usually I earn around Rp100,000 a day, but now it has increased to about Rp400,000. Alhamdulillah," she said.

The Indonesian regional government expects similar public events to strengthen community ties and support small businesses. Organizers also hope future gatherings will improve visitor access to local MSME stalls.
