Batik F-250 Blends Indonesian Art with US History

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - In a unique display of cultural diplomacy bridging Southeast Asian craftsmanship and American history, US Ambassador to ASEAN Kevin Kim officially unveiled the Batik F-250, a hand-drawn textile masterpiece designed to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of United States independence.

The ceremonial launch took place at the official residence of the US Ambassador to ASEAN in Jakarta on Friday night, September 18, 2026. Specially commissioned for the semiquincentennial milestone, the piece blends traditional Indonesian batik motifs with symbolic representations of American history, serving as a visual testament to deep-rooted US-ASEAN people-to-people ties.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch event, Ambassador Kim highlighted the symbolic significance of using a quintessential Indonesian medium to celebrate milestone moments in American history. "Celebrating the culture of the United States and Southeast Asia simultaneously through batik is extremely fitting," Kim said, as quoted by Antara.

"The goal is to highlight the history and beauty of America, blending it together with the beauty and artistic expertise of Mr. Mugi, the extraordinary artist who created this batik work," he added.

Kim noted that the US Department of State has maintained a long-standing appreciation for Indonesian textile art, preserving historic batik collections dating back to 1936 and the 1970s. Among the most iconic pieces in Washington’s archives is a custom batik shirt worn by former US President Ronald Reagan during his state visit to Indonesia in 1986.

Reflecting on this tradition, the ambassador expressed his intention to bring the commemorative piece back to the US capital to be permanently showcased in diplomacy halls.

"I hope to bring it back to Washington and display it prominently at the Department of State," Kim said, describing the textile as a lasting symbol of cultural appreciation and cross-continental friendship.

The piece was created by a master batik artisan from Pekalongan Mugi, Central Java, a region globally renowned as the heartland of Indonesian batik production. Crafted through the painstaking batik tulis (hand-drawn wax-resist dyeing) technique, the design weaves together motifs representing two centuries and a half of American history alongside traditional Indonesian patterns.

Mugi expressed deep gratitude for being entrusted with such a high-profile diplomatic commission. "This work was made using the hand-drawn batik process. I feel proud and grateful to be trusted to create this painting," Mugi said, adding that he carefully synthesized the spirit of the US semiquincentennial with authentic Indonesian artistic motifs.

"Hopefully, this Batik F-250 will not just be an ornament, but also a keepsake of the good relationship between the United States and ASEAN," Mugi added, expressing his hopes that US-ASEAN relations will grow stronger and foster mutual prosperity. ***
