Empat Musim Pertiwi Selected for 2027 Oscars, Highlights Women and Trauma

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Empat Musim Pertiwi, directed by Kamila Andini, has been selected to represent Indonesia at the 99th Academy Awards, or the 2027 Oscars. Produced by Forka Films, the film will be submitted in the Best International Feature Film category following its selection by the Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee (IOSC) during a plenary meeting on Monday, September 14, 2026.

“Four Seasons in Java (Empat Musim Pertiwi) has officially been selected as Indonesia’s representative for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, Oscars 2027!” Forka Films wrote in a statement accompanying its Instagram post.

Starring Putri Marino, Christine Hakim, and Arya Saloka, the film explores women’s experiences, trauma, memory, violence, and the process of confronting the past. The story follows Pertiwi, who returns to her hometown after 20 years and faces rejection as well as a painful past that once led to her imprisonment.

The experiences of women and the impact of trauma are central to the film, which is rooted in Indonesian cultural contexts. The story also explores broader themes of memory, violence, healing, and the struggle to confront one's past.

Before being selected as Indonesia’s representative, Empat Musim Pertiwi had its world premiere in the Centerpiece program at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film is also scheduled to screen at the 2026 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and the Tokyo International Film Festival later this year.

Being selected as Indonesia’s representative does not automatically secure a nomination for the 2027 Oscars. The film must still go through the selection process conducted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) alongside submissions from other countries.

Empat Musim Pertiwi is scheduled to be released in Indonesian cinemas on October 8, 2026, with limited screenings from September 22 to 28. With its focus on women confronting their past and its journey through international film festivals, the film adds to the growing presence of Indonesian cinema on the international stage.
