RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, has welcomed the agreement between the United States (US) and Iran, which includes a permanent cessation of hostilities, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework for further negotiations toward a more comprehensive peace settlement. In his official statement on Monday, June 15, 2026, Guterres expressed deep appreciation to Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and several other regional countries for their supportive and constructive role in the negotiation process.

“My deep appreciation goes to Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and other regional countries, for the constructive role played in supporting the negotiations that led to the peace deal,” he said.

Guterres also expressed hope that both parties would seize the momentum to intensify efforts toward a final resolution of the conflict. He also reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to support the achievement of sustainable and comprehensive peace.

The conflict between the US and Iran began in late February following attacks carried out by the US and Israel on several areas in Iran. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and Gulf countries allied with Washington.

The confrontation disrupted shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which around 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass. Although a ceasefire was reached in April, the US and Iran have continued to exchange sporadic attacks, including two rounds of retaliatory strikes earlier this week.

Previously, on Sunday, June 14, 2026, the Secretary General strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes on southern Beirut. In a separate statement, he said the strikes occurred amid an ongoing ceasefire and at a moment when Washington and Tehran were close to reaching an agreement expected to pave the way for peace.

He warned that the conflict has had a damaging impact on the global economy and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint at this critical moment. He also expressed hope that ongoing US–Iran efforts would result in an agreement that contributes to lasting peace in the region.

The tensions in Lebanon are part of broader unrest in the Middle East. The crisis erupted on March 2, days after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran, prompting Hezbollah in Lebanon to carry out strikes against Israel.
