RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The United Nations emphasized that peacekeeping forces should not be targeted amid rising security tensions in southern Lebanon. In a daily press conference on Monday, May 4, 2026, UN Secretary-General's Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, expressed concern over incidents involving UNIFIL peacekeeping forces along the Blue Line.

“We reiterate once again that our peacekeepers must never be targeted, and their safety and security must be guaranteed at all times by all parties,” Dujarric conveyed.

The statement was made following reports that UNIFIL patrols faced movement restrictions after Israeli military tanks blocked road access near al-Bayada last Friday.

On the same day, machine gun fire was also reported hitting one of the UNIFIL positions near At-Tiri, Bint Jbeil District, with one projectile hitting a UN vehicle inside the peacekeeping forces' complex.

Dujarric added that the escalation of the conflict in southern Lebanon continues to cause civilian casualties. “Yesterday, Ministry of Health reported 13 people were killed, including at least one child and four women, and 32 injured as a result of strikes in several locations in the southern part of Lebanon,” he said.

In addition to the casualties, local authorities estimate that more than 124,000 residents are now displaced and staying in schools and public buildings that have been converted into emergency shelters.

Amidst the situation, UN peacekeeping forces on Monday facilitated a humanitarian aid convoy consisting of around 30 trucks to the village of Ramech to assist approximately 7,000 residents who are still enduring difficult conditions.
