RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo - Amidst increasingly volatile global geopolitical dynamics, the annual Tokyo Conference convened from March 10–12, 2026. Organized by The Genron NPO, this year’s forum focused on the theme "Rebuilding Multilateralism within the Expanding Power-Driven Order," gathering former heads of state, ministerial-level officials, and international experts to address the erosion of the rules-based world order.

According to official statement on Saturday, the 6th President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), served as a primary contributor to the summit, emphasizing strategic options for Asia and the urgent necessity of restoring respect for international law. Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, noted that SBY’s presence was vital in gathering ideas to create a framework for global peace during an era increasingly defined by power politics.

The conference featured a distinguished lineup of keynote speakers, including former Japanese Prime Minister and Chief Advisor to the Tokyo Conference Fumio Kishida; Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim (via video); EU High Representative Kaja Kallas (via video); and former US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg. Other notable participants included the 10th President of Germany Christian Wulff and former Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

In his presentation, President SBY encouraged enhanced regional and global cooperation to face complex challenges. He expressed deep concern regarding the frequent violations of international law amidst current geopolitical uncertainties. He specifically cited recent escalations, including intensified attacks involving Israel, the US, and Iran, as well as the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, as evidence of a deteriorating legal order.

"International law is no longer adhered to, or even ignored. Yet power needs to be controlled. The tool to control power is other power," SBY stated, emphasizing that a rules-based world faces unprecedented challenges and that nations must prioritize dialogue over confrontation. He concluded by calling on the global community to return to common goals that prioritize collective international interests.

This sentiment was reinforced by Fumio Kishida, who reminded attendees that Asia remains the region most susceptible to the policies of great powers and inter-state conflicts. Other speakers echoed the need for multilateralism among nations committed to shared peace initiatives.

Prior to the main event, SBY co-chaired the Asian Leaders Roundtable titled "Asia's Options in an Age of Power: How to Defend and Rebuild the Rules-Based Multilateral Order." The roundtable included high-level Indonesian panelists such as Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, former Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and former Ambassador Rizal Sukma, alongside regional leaders such as Singapore’s Heng Swee Keat and India’s Duvvuri Subbarao.
