House Ready to Promote Peace in Sudan at World Parliament Forum

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee at the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Syahrul Aidi Maazat, received a courtesy call from Sudanese Ambassador Yassir Mohamed Ali Mohamed at the Indonesian Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Monday, September 1, 2026. The meeting discussed decades-long bilateral relations between Indonesia and Sudan, the latest developments in Sudan, and prospects for future economic cooperation.

Syahrul said the ambassador’s visit also served as a farewell ahead of the end of his diplomatic posting in Indonesia. He said the strong relations established between the two countries were an important foundation for further strengthening bilateral cooperation.

"He came here to say goodbye because he has reached retirement age. We expressed our gratitude for his presence and efforts to strengthen relations between Indonesia and Sudan," Syahrul said, as quoted from dpr.go.id.

During the meeting, the Sudanese ambassador also briefed Syahrul on the latest situation in his country. Syahrul said the Sudanese government currently controls more than 90 percent of the country’s territory, raising hopes that the ongoing conflict could soon come to an end.

"He said the Sudanese government now controls more than 90 percent of its territory. So, insyaallah (God willing), the war will end soon," he said.

Besides security issues, the two sides discussed potential economic cooperation. Syahrul said Sudan has vast agricultural land that remains open to investment, including from Indonesia.

"He said Sudan has around 80 million hectares of land, of which only about 20 percent is currently being cultivated. There are enormous investment opportunities in agriculture and plantations, particularly in wheat, cattle and buffalo farming, as well as other commodities that could be developed," he explained.

Syahrul also shared the Sudanese ambassador’s deep appreciation for Indonesia. During his posting in the country, the diplomat said he had been impressed by the warmth of Indonesian people and felt comfortable living in Indonesia.

"He said he was deeply moved and impressed by the kindness and hospitality of the Indonesian people. He even said he felt very at peace while living in Indonesia," Syahrul said.

Syahrul further said that the DPR’s BKSAP delegation will attend the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tanzania from October 5 to 9, 2026. At the global parliamentary forum, the DPR is committed to voicing the humanitarian situation still facing the people of Sudan.

"As a point of reference, I asked him for input on the issues we should raise at the upcoming IPU General Assembly regarding the situation in Sudan. He promised to provide us with that input. It is also our responsibility to help voice the condition of the Sudanese people in international forums," the member of Commission I said.

According to him, the conflict in Sudan requires international attention because it has caused immense suffering among civilians. Therefore, the DPR, through Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP,) will continue to support peace efforts and promote a resolution to the conflict through parliamentary diplomacy.
